The 2026 WISER Challenge Event was set against the picturesque backdrop of the Wye Valley, with Symonds Yat, Herefordshire, providing the perfect base for a memorable few days.

Students and staff took to the water to navigate nine miles of the River Wye—drifting gently along tranquil stretches, soaking in the stunning scenery and spotting wildlife along the way. Of course, the calm didn’t last forever, with windy bends and lively rapids demanding bursts of determined paddling!

The experience was as much about connection as adventure. It offered a valuable opportunity to catch up, share progress, and exchange stories of global research journeys—rounded off nicely with a well-earned drink at the local pub.

A visit to the historic Goodrich Castle added a touch of exploration on land, complete with its impressive walls AND turrets—followed, naturally, by a swift exit through the gift shop.

Altogether, it was a truly enjoyable few days spent in one of the country’s most beautiful regions.
