Conference 2022

The aim of the 1st Water-WISER Early Career Researcher Conference was to bring together a range of Early Career Researchers who are interested in Water and Waste, and its surrounding themes, and connect them with other researchers with a key focus on networking and developing potential partners. With themes ranging from Inequalities in Public Health to GIS and Remote Sensing, we incorporated a wide range of researchers from a variety of water and waste backgrounds.

The main conference ran over a 2-day period, with a third day involving a short field trip:

  • 21–22 June 2022 – In-Person Conference at Loughborough University
  • 23 June 2022 – An organised fieldtrip to Bradgate Park

Conference 2022 Statistics and Feedback:

In conclusion, the 1st Water Wiser Early Career Researcher’s conference had 100+ attendees over the two days of conference, and a one day field trip to Bradgate park. Feedback from the conference was that overall people had a great time connecting with peers, and attending some excellent presentations and keynote sessions.

The Conference Organisers also won ‘Team of the Year’ at the 2022 Loughborough PhD Awards, which recognised the team for their hard work pulling together this inaugural conference.

There were around 40 separate presentations, 20 posters, 4 keynote speakers, but most importantly it allowed ECR’s to get a taste of what both conference attendance and organisation is like. Professor Malcolm Cook, Head of the Architecture, Building, and Civil Engineering School praised the conference for its wide attendance and showcasing of some of the excellent researchers based in the department.

Many people have remained in contact following this conference, and a follow-up event was run as part of the IRC – All Systems Connect 2023 whereby a large cohort of Water-WISER students helped organise sessions at the conference and engaged with key members of the international WASH community.
